  2. German painter and printmaker, active in
  3. Regensburg, Bavaria. Altdorfer's work,
  4. inspired by the linear, classical style of
  5. the Italian Renaissance, often depicts
  6. dramatic landscapes that are out of scale
  7. with the figures in the paintings. His use of
  8. light creates tension and effects of
  9. movement. Many of his works are of
  10. religious subjects. With Durer and Cranach,
  11. Altdorfer is regarded as one of the leaders
  12. of the German Renaissance. St George and the
  13. Dragon 1510 (Alte Pinakothek, Munich) is an
  14. example of his landscape style; The Battle of
  15. Issus 1529 (also Munich) is a dramatic
  16. panorama.
